Getting ready for the opening had its little problems. While we were setting up the show someone tried to keep us from opening. The building was not actually in the Creole Gallery building, but two doors down on the same side of the street. It was a building that was Roberts ( the owner of Creole) and he decided that the space would be better to have the show in because it was bigger and it was empty. It hadn't been used in a few months by another business. Anyway, someone sent the fire marshall to stop us form opening that night. The caller said the space was unsafe and we were expecting larger numbers of people that should not be allowed to enter.
It has been some time since I have put my thoughts on paper. Much has happened since last year. First because of the political climate and the murder of Van Gough’s grandson I decided not to pursue the idea of using burkas and penises together. I still think it would be a very strong and powerful statement about the penis and it’s power over women. My family is concerned for my safety if I were to move in this direction, so maybe another time. I created a penis form that I call the Penasauris. It’s a penis that has legs. It’s really quite charming and fun. I thought it would be good if I/we/men could not be so serious about all of this. Women have had to invent ways of laughing at the fact the of body parts are on display, so I thought it would be OK for men to know what that felt like. Also the Penasauris is like a penis and dinosaur hybrid. It’s a humorous take on men’s slow, lumbering inability to change attitudes about equality for woman.
I have been working with Mark building my sculptures (that have become very large) and developing my own glaze. This has taken most of the summer and I’m still working on the glaze part. I have just about all of my 100 completed, I’m up to 96. By the time I have my show I should be well above the 100 mark. I have my first show scheduled for November 5th of this year at the Creole Gallery in Lansing's Old Town. This should be very interesting to see how the general public reacts to this project. I’m hoping that from this first show I will get an idea what I need to make more of and what no one is interested in. I hope to get it photographed and maybe even get it reviewed. If all of that happens I will have something to send to galleries for getting future shows.
I begin to think about this about the penis and what it means in a male dominated society. The idea the bigger the better, how does this relate to power in general and power over women. Back to the idea that men have power, they are usually bigger than women, are more aggressive, and are more violent. They are more competitive and take more chances. There seems to be a lot of competition between men. Who has the biggest penis shows up in very unusual ways. Who has the biggest car, biggest house, fastest boat, makes the most money etc. I also seems that having power over women is also a pretty big deal. All kinds of reasons are given to justify this action. Religion and culture are two biggies.
